CHILDREN’S ART WORKSHOPS

ST. PAUL’S CHILDREN’S CENTRE,
ONGATA RONGAI, KALIADO DISTRICT,
KENYA

This art project is linked to drawing and painting workshops held at St Paul’s Children’s Centre, an orphanage based in Ongata Rongai, Kaliado District, Kenya.

St Paul’s is responsible for the rehabilitation of abandoned street children and orphans. The Centre ensures that they are able to live in an environment of acceptance and understanding whilst learning to meet the new challenges that the loss of family life presents them. An important aspect of St. Paul’s is enabling the children to remain part of the community at large and attend the local school. The orphanage has its own ‘free range happy chicken hatchery’ and its own vegetable plots. The workshops have explored a variety of techniques including painting, collage, printmaking, relief carving, weaving and beadwork. These activities provide the children with recreational activity whilst providing very valuable craft skills that promote future job creation and employment for those leaving the centre and products that St Paul’s can sell or exchange within the local community for food, clothing and services.
